CONTRADICTION

BUT is used to show two contrasting, or conflicting, ideas.


REASON AND RESULT

The temperature in Coober Pedy is usually high, so people live in underground houses.

SO is used to connect a reason and a result. The result follows SO, and the result goes before it.

I came back late because I had too much work.

Use BECAUSE when you need to show the reason why something happened. You can not use it at the beginning of a sentence.


CONNECTING A NEW SIMILAR IDEA

This cafe is great, and the prices are good.

AND is used to add a new idea about the same topic when both things are true at the same time.


ALTERNATIVE

You can order coffee or tea with your meal.

OR is used to introduce an alternative, when there are two things you can choose from.
